Claire Webster Garden Design is a design studio based in Blackheath, South East London. Claire is a graduate of the
English Gardening School, Chelsea where she won awards for 'Top Student' and for 'Garden Writing'. She is also
a graduate of Manchester University. Some of Claire's designs are published in the latest edition of
The
Essential Garden Design Workbook
by Rosemary Alexander VMM(RHS), considered in the industry to be the leading
text on garden design.
Claire Webster
Claire has over ten years' experience of creating and maintaining beautiful London gardens. Her studio can
provide a comprehensive design service, project management, planting schemes and advice on maintaining
the garden once built. Whether you have a small shady urban space or a huge leafy acreage the emphasis
is on high quality and longevity. Claire has a comprehensive knowledge of plants and planting combinations
and of using plants in the right locations and is happy to advise on replanting existing borders.
'It's important to grasp how people live, how they want to use their gardens, what they like and really dislike
and how the garden will fit with the house and the surrounding area. I want clients to be excited by
their new gardens and to feel that I got it right!'
'...(we) are delighted with the transformation, its incredibly exciting, we can imagine how glorious this
is going to look next Summer!...It really is a delight'... (Mrs Davies, Blackheath)
'The garden has been amazing all year - still flowering in November!' (Mr Baxter, Greenwich)
Creating a new garden is exciting but it needs careful thought if it's to be a successful improvement to
your home. This is how the process works...
First Meeting
Claire will make an initial visit to meet you and to discuss your expectations for your garden; your likes
and dislikes, how you use your garden and how you'd like to use it. Following the meeting, she'll send
a fee proposal to you with a clear explanation of the stages of the design process and a cost for each
stage. This first consultation is free.
Site Survey
For any job, whether a large country estate or small London garden, it's essential to have an accurate scaled
survey. Claire Webster Garden Design uses a professional Chartered Surveyor for large or complex sites
but undertakes surveying in-house for small projects.

Concept Plan
Once Claire has a scaled drawing of the site, she can work up a concept plan (her initial ideas for the garden
design) which will be used for further discussion.
Layout Plan
When you're happy with the concept then Claire will draw up the layout plan. This is a scaled, detailed design
to show the structure of the new garden. It will include hard landscaping, irrigation and lighting systems
(if required) and the possible positions of new trees, structural shrubs and areas for planting: all
the information a landscape contractor will need to build your garden. Detailed construction drawings
can also be generated at this stage if needed.
Claire Webster Garden Design prides itself on producing hand-drawn layout plans but can generate 3D computer
generated plans if the client wishes.
Designer and client will meet again to approve this plan (please note that significant changes at this stage
may incur a further cost) and then Claire can turn her attention to the plants...
Plants bring life and colour and structure to a garden but it's essential to know which plants to use given the
soil, aspect, climate and use to which the garden will be put. Claire Webster Garden Design has the expertise
and experience to design planting schemes using plants and plant combinations which will thrive, whether
you have a shady London courtyard garden or an open sunny patch.
The planting plan will show the precise botanical name, number and size of the plants to be used. Claire Webster
Garden Design sources plants from high quality wholesale nurseries, many of which provide plants for RHS
show gardens.
